Second round of Montreal gay pride events kicks off Thursday

The second round of gay pride festivities in Montreal this month kicks off Thursday with a loud and proud four-day street festival ending with a pride parade on Sunday.
Divers/Cité ended last week, and pride celebrations begin in the gay village Thursday evening.
The competing events have drawn criticism from tourists who have complained that they came to Montreal for Divers/Cité expecting a parade.
"Divers/Cité is an A-1 event, " said Éric Pineault, President of LGBTA Montréal, an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and All, which took over organizing the parade last year. "But we feel Montreal's reputation as a welcoming city make it big enough for two festivals."
Pineault said LGBTA could have staged a pride parade in conjunction with the Divers/Cité event at the end of July. But, he said, a parade then would have been lost in all the other festivals going on at the same time. Divers Cité used to stage the parade but bowed out two years ago because it felt a parade in its program was too unwieldy.
The LGBTA pride party includes an open air concert in Parc Émilie Gamelin featuring Emily Bégin on Friday and an open air dance followed by Céline Dion impersonator, Dorion, on Saturday. There's also an avenue of kiosks promoting safe sex and a healthy gay lifestyle called the avenue of health and well being.
The parade begins 1 p.m. Sunday. It runs along René Lévesque Blvd. between de Lormier Ave. and St. Hubert St.
The theme of this year's $342,000 parade is Here Comes The Circus, and it is being choreographed by Stéphane Casselot.
It will feature 12 floats and about 1,500 marchers representing 48 different groups .
This year's parade marshalls are two-time Governor-General award winning author Nicole Brossard and French-language television celebrity Jasmin Roy.
A gay pride theme song, Humanity, has been written for this year's event by Gaspé musician James Dean Trepanier.
